Heat Advisories continue with highs near 100 degrees Monday

Houston weather: Heat Advisories continue with highs near 100 degrees Monday
A heat ridge over Texas will continue to crank the mercury toward 100 degrees, but there's still enough moisture around for a small chance for a cooling afternoon downpour.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Monday could be the hottest day of the year so far with high temperatures close to 100 degrees in the afternoon. That being said, Heat Advisories have been extended until 7p.m. Monday for most of Southeast Texas.

Sunday evening temperatures will fall into the upper 70s by Monday morning. And with another bright and sunny start to the day, temperatures will climb quickly into the mid-upper 90s by the early afternoon. This is as the heat dome centers overhead, but it's positioning could also bring in the chance for a few isolated showers and storms. Best chance for that will be east of I-45 beginning around 3 p.m. through 9 p.m. Monday. no severe weather is expected, but these could be a bit larger than some of the pop-up showers we've had the last few days. Otherwise, it's a sunny and hot day with heat index values making it feel like 108 to 112 degrees at times.

Should I be worried about the Saharan Haze in the forecast Monday?

A plume of Saharan dust currently making it's way through the Gulf of Mexico is expected to arrive along the Texas coast late Sunday night. First, this haze could give way to a colorful sunset Sunday night and sunrise Monday morning. The density of this Saharan dust cloud is not expected to be super thick, but it will linger Monday. If you're sensitive to this kind of partial matter in the air, best to avoid any strenuous outdoor activities Monday. Good idea anyway as high temperatures Monday could be close to 100 degrees.

What's in store for the Fourth of July?

It looks like the heat ridge will get stronger the first few days of July, keeping it seasonally hot for the holiday. The humidity should be fairly high, too, which will be good enough for a 10% chance of an Independence Day rain shower or thunderstorm. Otherwise, temperatures will be above average around the holiday with high temperatures in the upper 90s, so Heat Advisories could be warranted on the Fourth and for the days around it.

Any better rain chances on the way?

Unfortunately, not really. Monday and Wednesday have a 30% chance for isolated thunderstorms as the heat ridge overhead breaks down a little midweek. And that's the thing about heat domes: they're hot, (mainly) dry, and can linger a while.
