HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Former Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino will avoid jail time. This afternoon a judge sentenced him to 10 years' probation, a $1,000 fine, 150 hours of community service and an undetermined amount of money that he will donate to charity.

The money will be donated anonymously, per the judge's instructions, so that Trevino will get no credit for it.

Trevino pleaded guilty earlier this month to mismanaging funds collected by a charity he ran. During sentencing today, Trevino was ordered to 10 years' probation, but won't serve time behind bars. He's also been instructed to donate thousands of dollars to charity, anonymously.

According to Harris County, the guilty plea will not affect Trevino's retirement, healthcare or pension benefits. He will keep those.

The commissioners' court is also expected to appoint his successor this week.

The community hopes to have a say in the decision. Less than an hour after the judge sentenced Trevino, dozens of Precinct 6 residents held a community meeting to discuss who might be their next constable.

"We're just human beings. We make mistakes. I just want to put this past us. I think we lost a very good leader in the community," said resident Joseph Tijerina.

Trevino said little on his way out of court today. Surrounded by crying family, he thanked the community for their support.
