Texas residents could be missing out on millions in unclaimed funds

GALVESTON, TX -- Galveston County residents may have money waiting for them in the state's unclaimed property database, and they'll have an opportunity to search for it at two upcoming events hosted by the Texas Comptroller's office and Galveston County Clerk Dwight D. Sullivan.

Unclaimed property representatives from the comptroller's office will help people search for unclaimed property online, fill out claim forms and answer questions. The County Clerks staff will be available to assist the public with probate and other searches in order to claim their property. There are two opportunities to claim funds:

Tuesday, October 11, in the Galveston County Annex, at 174 Calder Drive in League City; 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday, October 12, in the Galveston County Jury Assembly Room, at 600 59th St. in Galveston; 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Unclaimed property includes forgotten utility deposits or other refunds, insurance proceeds, mineral interest or royalty payments, dormant bank accounts and abandoned safe deposit box contents. The Comptroller aims to reunite more than 28 million properties with their rightful owners.

"Teaming up with the Comptroller's office will allow us to try and give back more than $33 million in unclaimed money to their rightful owners," County Clerk Dwight Sullivan said. "I would encourage everyone to search www.ClaimItTexas.org to see if you have any money to be claimed."
