Bulk thrift shop offers fashions by the pound in Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- If you haven't bought your Halloween costume and are looking for materials, or perhaps you are just looking for a great place to get deals on name brand fashions, Too Cheap Blondes have found a pretty neat and affordable way to do both.

It's called shopping by the pound, and you can do it at a new place off Little York Rd., near Airline in north Houston.

The Family Thrift Outlet Bulk Store works exactly as it sounds: you buy clothes, shoes and accessories by the pound from the copious bins throughout the store.

There are only a handful of these type of bulk thrift stores in the nation and this one is the first in Houston. Here you pay by the pound, starting at 50 cents a pound and as you buy more, the price drops to 15 cents a pound.

Where does the clothing come from? This is the clearance center for the outlet. This is like a third level.

Before you shop, prepare by packing some hand sanitizer, as shoppers say sifting through clothes can be a little dirty. Give yourself lots of time to dig, an hour and a half may not be enough to find the best deals.

Also, wear form-fitting clothes. The store does not have a dressing room, so it will be easier for you to try clothes on with a little planning.

Shoppers say you need to be patient when shopping by the pound and always start from the back where you have a better chance of finding treasure than in the front bins, which are picked through first.

The Family Thrift Outlet Bulk Store is located at 127 Little York Rd. They are open from 9am to 6pm Fridays and Saturdays, and Sunday from noon to 6pm.
