Teacher accused of sex of abuse of a child appeared in court Friday.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- At 24 years old, those close to Alexandria Vera say she had many years ahead of her. Now, the mother of a 6-year-old, faces the possibility of 25 years to life behind bars.

"I got to admit it was very shocking," relative Sam Colotta said.

ABC13 talked to Sam Colotta by phone about the alleged relationship. He's the step-grandfather to Vera's ex-husband, Josh Olivo.

"That was not (the) Alex (that we know)," said Colotta, who knows "Alex" as a hard working mother who put herself through college.

Court documents show Vera was having a sexual relationship with her 13-year-old student from Stovall Middle School. She apparently became pregnant and then terminated her pregnancy after CPS began investigating.

"And (the relationship) was accepted by her parents they were overjoyed (about her pregnancy)," said Colotta.

A middle school teacher is wanted by authorities, accused of sexually abusing a child. There's a warrant out for her arrest.

Colotta said he was shocked when he heard Vera was in trouble with the law. He tells Eyewitness News that Vera divorced her step-grandson because she said he was "immature."

"I thought if Josh was immature what the he** is she doing with a 13-year-old," he said.

In court Friday, the judge said she was to have no contact with anyone under the age of 17, including the minor she's accused of abusing -- a teen described as "JT." She's also not permitted near schools or allowed to use the internet. The judge said if she fails to follow the restrictions she will be sent to jail.

"Alex today says she doesn't know what she did wrong," said Colotta.

Meantime, Colotta said Vera feels she did nothing wrong because she just fell in love. She's due back in court July 12th on aggravated sexual assault of a child charge.

Meantime, many questions have also been raised about the victim's parents, who allegedly agreed to the relationship. They reportedly said the entire relationship was consensual.

Investigators tell Eyewitness News the parents may also face charges, pending what detectives discover in this case.
