Magnolia ISD teacher mistakes thunder for gunshot, prompting lockdown, district says
The teacher's classroom has no exterior windows, the district said.
A clap of thunder mistaken for a gunshot prompted a multi-school lockdown and a multi-agency police response, according to Magnolia Independent School District officials.
The district said that a teacher at Williams Elementary called 911 shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday and reported hearing gunfire.
The Precinct 5 Constable’s Office and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office both responded, and the report prompted several MISD schools to go into lockdown, officials said.
According to MISD, the teacher, whose classroom is located in an interior room with no exterior windows, did not know a thunderstorm was moving into the area.
After first responders arrived, they confirmed there were no gunshots and at no time was any student or employee threatened, district officials said.
Classes resumed after all schools were declared safe and secure, MISD said.
