HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Texas Southern University alumnus Michael Strahan is offering his alma mater's marching band some big-time help.
Strahan announced Tuesday morning on ABC's 'Live with Kelly and Michael!' that he will donate $100,000 to help the 'Ocean of Soul' marching band get to Canton, Ohio in August. The band is trying to get there to play for Strahan's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Earlier this month, comedian Kevin Hart pledged to donate $50,000 to the band.
"We have a special edge. We bring things out to light that other bands cannot bring," drum major Darius Harris said.
Eva Pickens, TSU's Associate Vice President, who is leading the initiative, said the band's goal was to raise $150,000 in 30 days.
"If we surpass our goal, monies will be used for scholarships to band students," Pickens said in a release.
In southwest Houston, Strahan's high school, Westbury, also will perform in Ohio. This band, who you might have seen at the rodeo or other parades, raised money with bake sales and car washes. The school district covered many of the costs.
