Progress in a bungled west Houston sidewalk project after Ted Oberg Investigates
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Homes in a Spring Branch Houston neighborhood have had their driveways dug up for weeks as part of a city project, and last week city officials couldn't pinpoint a date on when dozens of homeowners will get their driveways back.
But work seemed to be picking up on Knoboak Drive after a city-paid contractor dug up sidewalks and driveways -- and then left them for weeks.
The contracting company, Current Construction, hasn't called abc13 back to explain the delay, but they were back on the job Monday morning.
"They got here this morning and our driveway has been poured," said homeowner Pat Matthews. "It doesn't mean it's finished, but it's been poured."
Last week she told abc13 about the hole that Current Construction left where her driveway used to be. Her neighbors were in the same situation.
The only explanation the company provided when Ted Oberg Investigates called was that "one of my subs didn't feel good and had a broken machine."
Matthews got her driveway today and her neighbor did too.
The only other driveway abc13 saw getting replaced, though, is one in front of a burned-out home.
Matthews, whose husband is a disabled veteran, is still frustrated.
"I can't get anyone to tell me how many days it has to cure," she said. "When I try to talk to them, they just drive off."
If the project is not done by Tuesday, the contractor will face an $800 fine each day until the project is complete, city officials said.
