HOUSTON (KTRK) -- What began as Houston's favorite food truck six years ago has now expanded to two brick and mortar locations in Bellaire and Katy.
Bernie's Burger Bus has been winning the hearts of Houstonians since 2010, with its 100% made-from-scratch burgers, hand cut fries and homemade condiments.
The culinary master behind this 'cool space' is Chef and Owner Justin Turner, who worked as a personal chef in Chicago before going out on his own.
"When I was twelve years old, I made a promise to my Grandfather Bernie that I was going to name a business after him," says Justin. "I think if he were able to see this today, he would be super-proud."
With a school bus inside that serves as its kitchen, the burger paradise gives customers a nostalgic feel with its classroom style dcor and academically -inspired menu choices.
"To me it was important to not just have the bus, but to have the school theme go throughout the entire restaurant," says Justin. "That includes lockers that customers can actually write on , school books in the bar, custom-made desks as tables, and composition notebooks and scantrons that serve as menus."
The classroom theme carries over to each menu item. Customers can enjoy fresh-ground Black Angus beef burgers like 'The Principal,' 'The Substitute,' 'The Class Clown' and 'The Fire Drill.'
"We take it to the cheesiest level possible, without losing its coolness," says Justin. "I like to say it's old school awesome."
Bernie's Burger Bus will open a third location in The Heights this summer.
