Suspect in custody after hit-and-run leaves woman dead: Police

PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) -- A woman whose family members say was on her usual morning walk for coffee was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Tuesday in Pasadena.

Police have arrested a suspect they believe struck Maria Trejo and drove away from the scene.

Trejo's family says she followed the same routine nearly every morning, walking from her home along Burke Road to a nearby gas station for coffee.

But on Tuesday morning, relatives say she never made it across the street.

According to the Pasadena Police Department, the crash happened around 6 a.m.

ABC13's SkyEye captured the aftermath as emergency crews worked to stabilize Trejo before transporting her to the hospital.

Hours later, Trejo died from her injuries.

ABC13 obtained surveillance video from the convenience store that Trejo frequently visited.

The video, fairly dark because of the early morning hours, appears to show Trejo walking across the street moments before a dark-colored truck hit her and continued driving away.

By Tuesday afternoon, Pasadena Police announced that 43-year-old Silvestre Martinez Rivera had been arrested and charged.

Investigators charged Rivera with failure to stop and render aid, a felony offense. They have not yet said how detectives identified or located the suspect so quickly.

Trejo's grandchildren gathered at her home on Tuesday as family members mourned her death.

Relatives were too emotional to speak on camera, but told ABC13 they are thankful police were able to quickly arrest a suspect in the case.

The investigation remains ongoing.
