Shelter-in-place lifted for parts of Texas City after plant fire was put out, city officials say

TEXSAS CITY, Texas (KTRK) -- A shelter-in-place order that was issued for parts of Texas City on Sunday morning was lifted after a reported plant fire was extinguished, city officials said.

The Texas City Police Department said at about 10 a.m. that the order was issued for residents from Bay Street to SH-146 due to a reported fire at the Marathon refinery. In an update at about 10:20 a.m., the order was narrowed to cover residents from 14th Street to 34th Street, according to police.

In an update at about 11:10 a.m., city officials told ABC13 that the shelter-in-place order was lifted.

Police said that the order was initially issued due to a smoky plume that was caused by the fire, combined with the south wind. In an update at about 11:05 a.m., the Texas City Office of Emergency Management told ABC13 that the fire at the Marathon facility was extinguished.

Officials said there were no reported injuries and that air monitoring has not shown any presence of chemicals.

ABC13 crews are en route to gather more information on the reported fire.
