SUGAR LAND, Texas (KTRK) -- Roundabouts are growing in popularity on our roadways, but one couple in Sugar Land fears the safety of one roundabout in their neighborhood is jeopardized by drivers who may not use it correctly.
Henry and Marla Radoff are retired and living near Constellation Field, near a two-lane roundabout at the intersection of Imperial and North Stadium Drive.
"When we first moved in, our concern was the traffic speeders," Henry said.
More development has happened in recent years, and they claim while the speed limit is 20 miles per hour in the roundabout, some drivers don't abide by it and others just don't seem to know how to use the intersection.
"Some will stop in the middle of the roundabout to try to figure what direction they're supposed to go," Marla said. "And some of them will even back up because they've gone the wrong way."
The city of Sugar Land says in 2022 there were 3 identified accidents in the roundabout, in 2023 there were 2, in 2024 there were 3, and the city did not have data compiled for 2025.
The Radoffs believe more wrecks are happening, but drivers don't stick around.
"They take off," Henry said. "I can't tell you how many rear-enders that we've watched going around the roundabout where people have hit and they've maybe exchanged information and taken off."
In response to our questions, the city of Sugar Land cited research from the Federal Highway Administration that "roundabouts have a 76% reduction in injury crashes and more than a 90% reduction in fatality crashes when compared to other intersection types."
The city does have rules posted online for multi-lane roundabouts Roundabouts | Sugar Land, TX - Official Website which show you should drop your speed and choose your lane before you enter and yield to drivers and walkers.
The Radoffs say they've expressed concern to law enforcement and council members over the years, while the city says the best way to voice a concern is through a formal complaint to 3-11 to determine if a traffic study is necessary. In order to track your complaint, the city says if you report over the phone, you must request a ticket number. However, if a report is made via email, live message, portal, or the SLTX app, a ticket number is provided in the acknowledgement response.
