HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A strong arctic cold front moved in last night bringing very cold air to SE Texas Wednesday.
About two thirds of SE Texas have been stuck below freezing today. With all the clouds, we shouldn't see temperatures rise much above freezing if at all in Houston this afternoon. Tonight, we will see even colder temperatures as skies clear. A hard freeze is on the table for parts of SE Texas including Houston.
Temperatures dropped to freezing starting at 9 am this morning in Houston and we have stayed below freezing ever since. Even colder temperatures are expected overnight as skies begin to clear. We could be talking a pretty widespread hard freeze for parts of SE Texas Thursday morning. You need to make sure you pipes are wrapped Wednesday evening before you go to bed due to those extremely cold forecasted temperatures. At this time, we are predicting a low in the low to mid 20s for Houston on Thursday morning, which will be the coldest of this Arctic cold snap. People, pets, plants, and pipes will need to be protected from this incoming cold air. Temperatures Friday morning will also dip into light freeze territory for most, with a low of 31 predicted in Houston. Because of the cloudy sky, highs on Friday will likely peak only in the upper 30s.
A flurry or two is possible but most of us won't see any sort of winter precipitation. The roadways will be just fine here in southeast Texas.
Temperatures will stay below normal through at least Sunday but we will warm back up into the 70s next week.
