Man shot by officers after they say he reached for gun during traffic stop, Magnolia PD says

MAGNOLIA, Texas (KTRK) -- A man was shot several times by officers after refusing to identify himself and exit the vehicle he was in during a traffic stop, according to the Magnolia Police Department.

Magnolia PD shared that the incident happened on Saturday at about 11 p.m. near the intersection of FM 1774 and Sugar Bend Drive.

While investigators did not say what prompted the traffic stop, they did say that after the suspect refused commands to produce identification or get out of the car, he allegedly reached to grab something from a door panel.

MPD said that an officer then unsuccessfully deployed his Taser, and that the suspect was still able to reach for the door panel before eventually retrieving a pistol.

Citing fear for their lives, officers said they fired their weapons and shot the suspect multiple times.

After officers said he was no longer a threat, investigators said they provided life-saving measures until the suspect was able to be taken to the hospital. MPD said he is currently stabilized.

MPD said the suspect was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, but did not share details about his felony. The suspect also allegedly had a warrant out of Harris County for fraud.

An active investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety is underway.
