Father of 4 shot, killed near his west Houston apartment on his way home from work, family says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A young father coming home from work was killed just a block from his home, says his devastated mother.

Emilia Caxaj wiped away tears as she confirmed to ABC13 on Monday that her son, 24-year-old Felix Caxaj, was shot dead around 11 p.m. Sunday.

"He called a neighbor to come pick him up because it already got late," she said, adding that her son worked at a restaurant near downtown Houston. "He got dropped off at the corner, because he wanted to buy some food before he went home."

Felix was dropped off at the corner of Skyline and Unity, a block from the apartment where he lived. Family members said he had planned to go to the corner taco truck, which is open until midnight.

Houston police say an unknown suspect shot Felix moments after he got out of the friend's car.

ABC13 obtained surveillance video from a nearby strip center showing a black sedan. HPD investigators confirm they believe the car is linked to the suspect in the shooting.

The woman running the taco shop in the parking lot of the strip center said the suspect approached her just minutes before the shooting.

"The man approached my truck, and he already had the weapon in his hand," the woman, who did not want to show her face because of fear, said. "He asked me if I would charge his phone, and I told him no, we did not have a charger to charge phones."

The taco truck worker said the suspect then drove off in the black car, only to return minutes later to the same area, and that's when the shooting occurred.

"My son, he is a hard worker. He doesn't go out. He just works and comes home. He doesn't even have friends," Felix's mother said. She confirms her son has a wife and four kids in Guatemala and was working to make money to support his children.

HPD investigators say they believe they have made significant progress in tracking down leads in the case, but urge anyone with information to contact them.
