Crews demolish building on campus of former school that caught fire in July

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Crews appear to have begun demolishing an abandoned school in northwest Houston that caught on fire in July.

ABC13 was at the scene on Center Street near Studemont in the Washington Avenue Corridor Monday morning, where crews were seen taking apart large chunks of the building.

In 2025, Houston's ISD board approved selling the building, marked "Harper School," along with several surplus district properties.

After the fire in July, Mayor John Whitmire called for preserving what was left of the building. Whitmire stated that the school served Black students during segregation and is an important piece of Houston's history.

ABC13 was told the building was sold before it caught fire.
