4 hurt after repeat DWI driver crashes into crowded sidewalk: HPD

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A Saturday night in the Spring Branch area turned violent when police say an intoxicated driver plowed into a crowded sidewalk near a neighborhood park, leaving four people with serious injuries.

According to court records, the driver, identified as Jose Agustin Menjivar, has a history of alcohol-related offenses.

Witnesses reported that around 8 p.m., Menjivar drove into food vendor stands in front of Pitner Pocket Park near Hollister before striking a parked vehicle.

"It was bad. It was bad," one witness, who asked not to be identified, told ABC13.

Court documents state that Menjivar admitted to drinking five 25-ounce beers before losing consciousness behind the wheel. When officers arrived, they found four victims on the ground. Monday, an HPD spokesperson said they remain hospitalized with serious to life-threatening injuries.

The witness said bystanders prevented Menjivar from leaving the scene.

Menjivar now faces four intoxication assault charges, adding to four prior alcohol-related offenses on his record, including two misdemeanor DWIs and two felony convictions that previously sent him to prison.

"I think they should keep him in there," the witness said. "Honestly, that's a danger to society."

The 47-year-old told the court he is a Salvadoran national. He is currently being held without bond pending his next court appearance.
