Plants that can stand the Houston heat

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Even though summer is in full swing, it's not too late to plant your garden.

There are several heat-thriving plants that have true grit and will not break the bank. The folks at Cornelius Nursery say that there are a long list of plants that thrive in Houston's heat.

"You have to have the right plants for the right place. You have to know so that you can help them and that saves them money that way," said Cornelius Nursery supervisor Blanche Butler.

If you're trying to save money, go for plants like the Bougainvillea that will take up a lot of space instead of using lots of smaller ones. You can find the plant priced for as low as $8.

Like the Bougainvillea, the Lantana plant takes up lots of space, and you can put it in the sun and pretty much ignore it.

"They can get up high, 4 to 5 feet high. You can chop them off to the ground and they'll come right back," Butler said. "It will give you a lot of color saves you money in the long run."

The Lantana will run you about $5.

Another plant that can stand the heat is the Potato Vine Plant. It is only $2 and will triple in size in no time.

"I really like this one because it really takes a lot of heat. You can really have it in full sun all day ignore it," Butler said.

There are also plants that produce food and flowers that you can plant now. Start with a good soil base, then you can add eggplant, herbs, peppers, or tomato plants.
