Suspect in murder east Harris Co. outside pizzeria was wanted in another state

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man accused in the brutal stabbing death of a Houston woman was wanted on a felony warrant out Illinois just before he was released from a Texas prison.

Eyewitness News has learned Maytham Alsaedy, 24, was serving a seven-month sentence in a Texas state prison after he was convicted of possession of meth in Bell County.

Days before his release, we learned Texas authorities contacted Illinois to find out if authorities there wanted to extradite him on the felony warrant. According to TDCJ, on February 20th, 2014, Illinois authorities declined the offer.

Days later, Alsaedy stabbed and killed 22-year-old Kella Bracken. Her body was found in her car that was parked outside of a Peter Piper Pizza restaurant in east Harris county.

Days after her killing, Eyewitness News spoke with a woman who said Alsaedy attacked her outside of a Walmart parking lot near that pizza restaurant. She was able to get away, and two men were able to apprehend Alsaedy. According to police, he confessed to Bracken's murder.

"You're telling me I lost my sister because you could not come and get a fugitive? That's devastating," said Braken's sister Katelynne Schmidt. "I could have my little sister right now something has to happen with this justice system. It's completely ridiculous."

Eyewitness news learned the felony warrant out of Winnebago County was ordered after Alsaedy failed to report to his probation officer. He was charged for aggravated assault. Court papers obtained by ABC-13 reveal a similar attack on a woman in a park. According to court papers, in 2013 Alsaedy grabbed a woman in a park, pulled her 40 yards near a tree line and choked her. Court papers state he then pulled out a gun when the woman tried to call 911. The victim was able to get away. Alsaedy was arrested for that crime.

"I want that personal phone call as to why they did not try hard enough to get this man," said Schmidt.
