Pearland residents: 'Stay in your homes'

PEARLAND, Texas (KTRK) -- City leaders urge Pearland residents to stay in their homes due to widespread continued flooding. A citywide curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. remains in effect.

The city has received up to 46 inches of rain since Saturday, and the fire chief says more than 400 water rescues have been conducted. At this time, they are only rescuing those who have medical emergencies or water in their homes.

The city manager requests residents stay in their home, but if you have to leave, follow the evacuation route posted on the Pearland website. There are still flooded roads, neighborhoods, homes, businesses and other facilities. Don't drive past barricades, and don't drive the wrong way on roadways.

Any residents who have evacuated should continue to monitor the situation, but the fire chief suggested evacuees might be able to return on Thursday.

A shelter opened at noon Tuesday at Pearland High School, with limited availability. Volunteers can sign up on the city's website.

Officials are working on opening more shelters in conjunction with Brazoria County.

Pearland's city manager reminded residents not to believe everything on social media. While the city did have some facility damage to sewage treatment plants, the water is safe to drink.

No injuries have been reported so far from the flooding. No fatalities have occurred, according to Pearland city officials.
