Texas Southern names acting police chief after previous leader resigned
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Nearly a month after then-Police Chief Remon Green resigned at Texas Southern over allegations of sexual harassment, the university has announced a new acting chief.
Mary Young, a veteran officer with the Houston Police Department, will take over at TSU.
"We are excited to have an officer of Ms. Young's caliber join our university," said TSU President Austin Lane in a statement. "Her experience in connecting and developing positive bonds with the communities that she serves will prove valuable as we continue in our efforts to make Texas Southern University one of the safest campuses in Texas."
According to TSU, Young's accolades include implementing grassroots programs for youth and seniors, and helping to bridge the gap between HPD and the community.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
Last October, a formal complaint was filed against Green. The complaint, from a female employee, alleged sexual harassment. After a three month investigation, TSU found it couldn't substantiate the claims. The university determined Green violated policy and recommended his termination, or removal from a leadership position and disciplinary suspension.
Green's resignation became official on March 1.
