HOUSTON (KTRK) -- If you're a parent behind on child support payments, this message is for you.
You've been warned.
Starting September 1, parents in Texas who are 180 days behind on child support payments will be denied the ability to renew their vehicle registration. The law does not apply to the registration of new vehicles.
"I want to urge the public to be aware this law is taking effect, to be prepared and to get in touch with the Attorney General's office to take care of their obligations," said Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Mike Sullivan.
According to the attorney general's office, those who are behind on child support payments will be notified 90 days prior to their renewal date. The letter will state that the registration renewal will not be processed until a payment plan is arranged and a "satisfactory" payment made.
If you are behind on child support payments, contact the OAG office at 1(866)646-5611.
