An officer shot at a suspect who allegedly tried to flee arrest

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An off-duty police officer fired at least one shot at a suspect this morning in southeast Houston.

The shooting happened around 1:50am in the 4800 block of Gulf Freeway outside Family Pool Hall. No one was hit.

Police say Jacinto City Officer D. Martinez, while working a second job in security, arrested a man suspected of dealing drugs inside a bathroom. The officer handcuffed the man and brought him outside, but the officer got distracted by two men fighting outside the business. When the officer turned to look, the man the officer arrested ran away and jumped into a waiting car.

The officer fired at the suspect's vehicle, but the suspect wasn't hit.

Houston police officers nearby heard the gunshots and went toward the scene. HPD arrested the handcuffed suspect and his driver a short distance away.

The driver is charged with hindering apprehension and the handcuffed man is charged with evading an arrest.
