1st tropical storm of Pacific season forms off Mexico

MIAMI, FL -- The first named tropical storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season has formed far from Mexico's coast.

Tropical Storm Andres formed Thursday and has maximum sustained winds near 40 mph (65 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the storm could become a hurricane by late Friday, though it is not currently forecast to threaten land.

The depression is centered about 690 miles (1,115 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving west-northwest near 14 mph (22 kph).
