HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A METRO bus has been involved in an accident in northeast Houston.
The accident happened at about noon, along Hirsch near East Crosstimbers. Authorities say the bus and van were traveling in opposite directions on East Crosstimbers when the two vehicles collided almost head-on. METRO officials say it appears the bus driver is at fault, for making a left turn in front of the other vehicle.
The bus slid into a field, and the driver of the van stumbled to safety just before it burst into flames.
Eyewitness Maricela Garcia said, "The man, he was just trying to come out of the van. He was struggling and injured, because he was limping. I guess other people from the gas station were helping him."
Sixteen people were taken to local hospitals -- fourteen bus passengers and both drivers. All the injuries are described as minor.
METRO police are investigating.
