Katy ISD investigating 'gang-related' fight inside junior high school restroom

KATY, TX (KTRK) -- Katy ISD parents were shocked to hear about gang activity in their district.

"I think not Katy. I think that where we live, that really isn't something that's relevant to us," said parent Sarah Thai.

But it's become a grim reality at T.H. McDonald Junior High School. Ten students gathered in the boys bathroom for a so called "gang initiation." The district sent out an email Monday alerting parents about gang violent on school grounds. District leaders released a statement:

"An investigation by Katy ISD police is still pending. However, at this time, it is believed that one individual voluntarily agreed to be physically assaulted by the other students involved, as part of a gang-related activity."

President of the school's PTO Zilla Miller says she got the email alert too. Her sons an eighth grader.

"It makes me sad. Anything that's going to harm another child and that's going to be a negative influence to any of the kids whether it's at our school or out of school, it was sad," said Miller.

Parents say this certainly a wake up call, especially as the district continues to grow.

"It's a surprise but we have to be real. I know that it does exist. Any time something like this happens there is a closer ear to it," added Thai.

School officials say no arrests were made, but all the students involved were suspended. Six of the 10 students involved were referred to the alternative school.
