MIAMI -- Idalia roared ashore in Florida Wednesday morning, making landfall in the Big Bend region as a powerful Category 3 hurricane.

Idalia has since weakened to a tropical storm. The latest path has Idalia moving northeast before reentering the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, tracking away from the U.S.

A life-threatening storm surge is a major threat. Most of the coastal Tampa Bay area has experienced flooding.

Storm surge will continue due to the circulation of tropical storm Idalia, with the winds bringing water ashore.

The storm surge could reach 5 feet in the flood-vulnerable cities of Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina.

The heaviest rain through Thursday will be in the Carolinas, where some areas could see more than 10 inches of rain.
