Homeowner opens fire at burglars
Deputies say when the homeowner heard the break in, he grabbed his gun

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A homeowner decided to fight back after a group of armed burglars tried breaking into his home Tuesday morning.

Harris County Sheriff's deputies responded to a burglary in progress in the 14000 block of Merry Meadow Drive around 4am. Officials said the homeowner was sleeping on his couch when he heard burglars trying to break in through his front door. The homeowner then pulled out a weapon and began firing at the suspects, said deputies, as the men broke open the door.

The suspects turned around and ran back to their getaway car but still managed to return fire, said authorities. Several neighbors told Eyewitness News they heard the gunfire but were too scared to look out their bedroom windows.

"I have kids, small children and a 17-year-old. It is very disturbing," said neighbor Karon Provost, "very disturbing."

Deputies say no one was injured during the shootout. They are still looking into whether or not this family was targeted or was hit at random.
