Eyewitness News Action 13: What we know about the COVID-19 vaccine
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- With a COVID-19 vaccine showing some promising progress, there are a lot of questions about the vaccine. Eyewitness News Action 13 team worked to answer all of your questions during a COVID-19 special on Wednesday.
Announcements of a possible COVID-19 vaccine coming soon offered a glimpse of hope as coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country and as Texas hits 1 million confirmed cases.
In the video above, Action 13 answered the most asked questions about the vaccine, like who will get the vaccine first, how it'll be distributed, what we know about the vaccine trials, who will pay for the vaccine and the many challenges health officials may face.
The Action 13 special covered five key points:
- All five companies that are working on vaccines, which include Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Novavax, are in phase three of trials.
- Pfizer is the farthest along in the trials, reporting its vaccine is 90% effective.
- Both Pfizer and Moderna could request emergency authorization for their vaccines later this month.
- When Texas begins rolling out the vaccines, health care workers and those in high-risk groups will get it first.
- According to the CDC, COVID-19 vaccines distributed in the U.S. will be free for everyone regardless of whether you have insurance or not.
