New prosecutor named in the murder case against Shannon Miles

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The defense attorney for Shannon Miles said his client had 'no recollection' of the day Deputy Darren Goforth was murdered.

Miles is accused of shooting Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Goforth to death at a northwest Harris County gas station in August of 2015.

Attorney Anthony Osso said his client has a history of schizophrenia and psychotic episodes, and he's still exploring insanity as a defense, saying Miles doesn't even remember the day of the murder.

Defendant Miles was in court Tuesday morning with a full head of hair and beard -- a contrast to his more recent clean-shaven appearance.

Although this wasn't a formal court proceeding, Miles was in attendance while his attorneys spoke to the judge and newly-appointed prosecutor, Montgomery County DA Brett Ligon.

Ligon brought in additional prosecutorial firepower in with fellow Galveston County DA Jack Rhode.

Ligon says his office is just a fraction of the size of Harris County's and he needs the help.

Meanwhile, the defense attorneys told the judge they're still waiting on DNA results and ballistics evidence, as well as trying to address Miles' mental state.
