Armed thieves terrorize workers at two Houston restaurants overnight

HOUSTON

One happened at a Popeyes on Airline near Berry late last night. Video from inside the north Houston fast food restaurant may help police track down the men who robbed it. Two men used a brick to smash through the glass door. Employees had just closed up for the night.

"My co-workers in the front were like, 'They broke the glass. They're robbing us,'" said one employee with whom we spoke. "That's when I saw them actually come through the back with their masks on. I didn't see the guns at first. Then they pulled their guns and I knew it was serious."

A few employees ran out the building, while three others hid in the freezer. The suspects cleaned out the cash registers and the safe, which was already open.

They took off in a car driven by a third suspect. No one was hurt.

The other happened at a Denny's FM 1960 in northwest Harris County. The night manager, Eva Mendez, says three masked men robbed the place. She said two of them pointed shotguns at her and demanded money.

She emptied the safe, but they apparently wanted money in the register, too.

Mendez used her training to stay calm even though she was afraid for her life.

"I did exactly what they showed me, and I think that saved my life," she said. "I didn't think I was going to live another day. I thought at the end of the time they were going to kill us all."

Mendez says one of her co-workers was beaten and taken to the hospital.
