Officer-involved shooting under investigation in SW Houston

HOUSTON

Police were called to check out a disturbance at the Hotel Preet on the Southwest Freeway and the Beltway earlier this morning.

An officer went to see what was happening and dozens of witnesses pointed toward a silver Jeep Cherokee. The Jeep tried to pull away and an officer attempted to stop it, but police say the driver of the vehicle refused to obey.

"The vehicle accelerated towards Officer Garza who attempted to stop it," said HPD spokesperson Kese Smith. "The driver refused to obey. Officer Garza jumped out of the way as it drove past him and then turned around because there is no exit over there and came back towards Officer Garza."

HPD says the officer attempted again to stop the suspect, but couldn't. The passenger reportedly pulled a weapon when the officer approached, which is when the officer fired his weapon more than once, hitting the vehicle.

HPD officials say they don't believe anyone was hit. Police stopped a similar vehicle down the street and detained two people. It's unknown if they were involved in the earlier incident.
