In a joint statement released on Monday, the couple said, "We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time."
Thicke, 36, and Patton, 38, first met as teenagers and married in 2005. They had a son in 2010.
Thicke is known for hits such as "Blurred Lines" and "Lost Without U." Patton has appeared in the films "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," ''Idlewild," and "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."
