HISD held meetings on closures of five schools

HOUSTON

HISD held public meetings at three of those schools this evening and a lot of parents showed up.

The district wants to close Jones High along with Fleming Middle School, and Dodson, Henderson, and Port Houston elementary schools. HISD says the main reason is fluctuating enrollment and changing demographics across the city.

Parents hope the district is really listening at these meetings.

"That the community is behind these schools and really support in them but other than that they are probably just a dog and pony show," said parent Marcus Glen.

"The goal here is really to ensure that all schools have full enrollment so that they are able to offer a full slate of course offering and programs and enrichment activities to kids," said HISD spokesperson Holly Huffman.

HISD will hold three more meetings next week.
