Police officer on motorcycle struck by car near Rice University

HOUSTON

Investigators say the South Houston police officer had his motorcycle's lights and sirens on while going south on Greenbriar Drive at University Boulevard just after noon.

Another driver traveling in the same direction failed to yield to the motorcade. That driver was turning toward Rice Stadium when he cut off the officer and hit him. The bike went into the grass next to the road.

"The officer has been transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries," HPD Sgt. Karl Harris said. "He was conscious and talking."

South Houston police said the officer suffered a few cracked ribs but is doing fine. He was being kept overnight at the hospital for observation.

We're told the driver was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
