They are partnering with some of Houston's pet advocate groups -- Friends For Life Animal Rescue, Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP), the Houston BARC Foundation and Unity For A Solution -- to try something they've never done before in the community: targeted spaying and neutering.
The Saturday event was part of a new initiative to control the growing problem of animal population in Houston. They offered free spay and neuter services to cats and dogs on Houston's north side Saturday.
Animal lovers say it helped a lot to save a little money. Parker says it's important to help to families who are working to get animals off the streets.
"You have to do something about spaying and neutering animals. There's no magic to this. You have to do something about animals coming in on the front end," she said.
In all, 70 dogs and cats were fixed Saturday.
The goal of the whole initiative is reduce pet overpopulation and promote pet wellness in targeted areas of Houston, one neighborhood at a time. Organizers say it is the first of many events like this to come.
