Brazil truckers block highways in several states

SAO PAULO, Brazil

Police say truckers either partially or completely blocked interstate and intercity highways in at least six states Wednesday and torched eight toll booths on the highway between the cities of Cosmopolis and Paulinia in the state of Sao Paulo.

In most cases truckers left one lane open so that buses, ambulances and passenger cars could pass the blockades they set up.

The wave of protests that hit Brazil on June 17 began as opposition to transportation fare hikes, then expanded to a laundry list of causes including anger at high taxes, poor services and high World Cup spending.
