Houston pilot injured in Grimes County glider crash near Navasota Municipal Airport

HOUSTON

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the 34-year-old pilot was trying to land at the Navasota Municipal Airport on Highway 105 around 6:30pm yesterday. Something went wrong and he crash landed in a field nearby.

The crash happened just across the street from Patrick Ramone's home. He says he ran toward the victim as soon as he saw a hand waving.

"I sort of stabilized him a little bit, asking him how he was doing, trying to keep him talking," Ramone said. "And then my wife called 911 and the police started coming. He asked me to prop him up so I sat with him for about 30 minutes just making sure he was OK."

The pilot was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in serious condition with a broken arm, broken leg and internal injuries.

The fixed-wing glider was destroyed on impact.

Federal Aviation Administration authorities are out today, looking into the cause of the crash. The pilot's name has not been released.
