Coast Guard rescues unconscious deckhand from crew boat in Gulf of Mexico

HOUSTON

It all happened in the Gulf of Mexico, about 76 miles from Cameron, Louisiana.

According to U.S. Coast Guard officials, the crew of the Citation -- the sister ship of the 97-foot Orien -- contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston for assistance, reporting that a deckhand on the Orien was found unconscious.

Watchstanders launched aircrews aboard an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Houston to medevac the man, and an Air Station Corpus Christi HU-25 Falcon jet was called out to assist with communications and support.

The aircrew transported the man to West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital for medical care. At last check, he was stable.

"A medical emergency offshore requires an immediate response," said Lt. Spencer Roach, the command duty officer at the sector. "Every minute counts. The rapid response of the aircrew may have made the difference."
