Thieves stealing lawn furniture off homeowners' porches in northwest Houston

HOUSTON

Some may call stealing lawn furniture a bizarre crime, but deputies say it's happening quite a bit now on the northwest side. And some neighbors are catching the culprits on tape.

Surveillance video shows a man in a hooded jacket creeping on to Julie Sherber's porch. Sherber says that man is the thief who stole the furniture in front of her house on 30th Street over the weekend.

"I drove up, and I noticed that my front porch looked really empty and my chairs were missing," Sherber said.

Sherber says the unidentified man targeted her house around 4am Saturday and walked off with two large wicker chairs. She says the thief didn't care the house was well lit and covered with cameras.

"I was very angry. We have two little girls at home and I was just mad that he was that close to my front door," Sherber said.

And that's not the only house on this block thieves hit.

While Eyewitness News was out there to cover this theft, a neighbor at a house across the street actually called the constable's office to report a different incident. That homeowner said the thief took off with an iron bench that was sitting on her porch.

Neighbor Velma Walker's concerned too.

"I just wish they could put a stop to it," she said.

Precinct 1 deputy constables say they've been investigating several similar theft reports in this area recently.

Sherber says she just hopes this video's enough to help identify the man.

"I think it's amazing that somebody wants to steal patio furniture. I mean it's come to the point where we have to lock up our chairs now? I mean it just doesn't make any sense," Sherber said.

In additional to the stolen lawn furniture, deputies and police are also monitoring a string of armed robberies that have been picking up in this area recently.
