Houston Open charities receive $2.285 million

HOUSTON

Association officials announced the total on Thursday.

The Houston Golf Association has been funding youth-development programs since 1974. A total of $57.5 million has been donated to charities through the HGA -- more than 93 percent since Shell Oil became the tournament's title sponsor in 1992.

The HGA raised $2,077,000 in 2011. This marks the 19th consecutive year that the contribution has exceeded a million dollars. The Houston Open is the 10th oldest event on the tour schedule. Shell's title-sponsorship agreement runs through the 2017 event.

This year's tournament runs from March 28-31 at the Redstone Golf Club.
