Officials at University Hospital in San Antonio say Bexar County sheriff's Deputy Eric Espino was in fair and stable condition Tuesday. The off-duty deputy was wounded early Monday during a party at a residence.
Detective Louis Antu says Espino apparently put his hand over the muzzle of a shotgun. Espino was shot in the right hand when he picked up the weapon and it discharged.
Investigators are trying to determine whether alcohol played a role in the wounding of the detention officer.
