Officials with the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office and Galveston Island Beach Patrol say Mia Briones was with relatives when she apparently wandered off Sunday night. After a 10-minute search, relatives found her in the lagoon near the beach.
A medical examiner's spokesman tells The Galveston County Daily News the toddler was pronounced dead at an area hospital early Monday morning. An autopsy is scheduled to determine cause of death.
The girl disappeared after a beach patrol member working security at a recreational vehicle park told her relatives camping wasn't allowed on the beach.
Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis says the relatives assume the toddler walked off as they were gathering their things to move.
