A balcony caught fire at an apartment in west Houston overnight and a passerby was able to alert residents and get them out safely.

The fire started around 1am at The Palms at Kirkwood apartments on Briar Forest.

Marcus Spikes was driving by and spotted the flames. He pulled over and knocked on the door of the apartment owner.

"I wasn't a hero. I just did what I would have wanted people to do at my house," Spikes said. "I figured when there was smoke out there I would wake people up in the middle of the night and let them know there was a fire out there on their balcony."

Everyone was able to get out safely. The flames did not spread inside the apartment. Arson investigators are trying to discover what started the fire.
