Obama: No short cut to peace in Middle East

UNITED NATIONS

In a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Obama expresses frustration at the failure of both parties to bridge their differences and at the Palestinian leader for planning to seek a declaration of statehood through the Security Council. The U.S. has said it will veto such an effort.

Obama says peace won't come through statements and resolutions at the U.N., but rather only through a resumption of direct negotiations. He says the parties are the only ones who can agree on the issues that continue to divide them.

Obama planned separate meetings after the speech with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
