It happened around 4am on East Hardy at Tidwell Ln.
Investigators said a red Mercedes sports car was traveling north on E. Hardy at a high rate of speed when the driver veered off the roadway.
He struck a fire hydrant, knocking it down, and then hit a mound of dirt and went airborne. That's when he crashed into a wooden telephone pole, splitting the pole and knocking the power out in the area.
The car split in half, officials said, with the engine and front wheels separated from the rest of the car.
The driver was rushed to Ben Taub General Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released.
