The death sentence for a man convicted of killing a Houston police officer nearly three years ago has been upheld by Texas' highest criminal court.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Wednesday rejected arguments from 30-year-old Mabry Landor that included challenges to his confession for the December 2008 slaying of Timothy Abernethy. The officer was shot while pursuing Landor, who ran after he was pulled over for a traffic stop.

Landor had no license, was carrying a gun and was on parole for felony driving while intoxicated.

The shooting occurred in an apartment complex where Abernethy was chasing Landor. Residents saw Landor run back to his SUV after the shooting and drive off. They provided a description and partial license plate number that led to Landor's capture.
