A 63-year-old man injured in the fatal shooting of Austin musician Bill Leslie Maddox has died. A Travis County sheriff's official says that John Joseph Debrecht died Thursday at University Medical Center Brackenridge.

Debrecht was a retired engineer who was shot during a struggle Monday morning at Maddox's home. The two men lived near each other but were strangers.

Authorities initially identified Debrecht as an intruder in the musician's home during an attempted burglary.

The Austin-American Statesman reports that friends and family members say the incident was probably not a burglary attempt but the result of a tragic misunderstanding possibly caused by medication Debrecht was taking for an illness.

Debrecht was a father of four, avid runner and longtime Catholic church member.

Police continue to investigate.
