The sheriff's office says Varela and three other men were arrested Tuesday on charges of delivery of 43 pounds of marijuana. A search of the vehicle driven by Varela also led to the discovery of cocaine and the councilman being charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Bond is $140,000 for Varela. Electronic jail records did not list an attorney for Varela. A message left with his council office was not immediately returned.
City Manager Many Soto told The Associated Press that Varela's arrest was a personnel issue that might be discussed at Thursday's council meeting during an executive session.
