Big news for the Houston Independent School District and its students as the district has been awarded more than $11 million to fund five new magnet programs. The money will go towards two whole-school Montessori magnets ? one at Garden Oaks Elementary and one at Dodson Elementary. The funds will also be used for a Health Science magnet at Whidby Elementary.

At the secondary level, Fondren Middle School will become an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme magnet school, and Jones High School will become a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math magnet.

HISD says the project will provide enriching experiences to students zoned to these schools as well as students from all parts of Houston.
